About the Course

Good leaders respond when problems occur. Risk-based leaders recognise the warning signs before things go wrong.

The Risk-Based Leadership™ Development Program is a practical leadership program for supervisors, team leaders, superintendents, managers and safety/risk professionals working in complex or high-risk environments.

This is not a generic leadership course. It is built from an operational risk, incident investigation and critical control management perspective.

Program Overview

This six-month program develops the leadership capability required to make confident, defensible decisions in environments where poor supervision, weak risk recognition or unclear accountability can lead to serious incidents, operational failure or organisational harm.

Participants complete six practical modules, delivered over 12 face-to-face training days.

Each module focuses on the leadership factors that commonly appear in serious incidents, audits, investigations and operational breakdowns.

What Participants Will Learn

Participants will learn how to:

  • Recognise early warning signs before risks escalate

  • Make sound decisions under pressure

  • Lead teams through uncertainty, change and competing priorities

  • Strengthen supervision, accountability and communication

  • Manage contractor and project risk more effectively

  • Understand psychosocial hazards as a leadership responsibility

  • Apply critical risk and control assurance thinking

  • Respond effectively during incidents and crisis situations

Program Modules

Module 1: Leadership Foundations and Psychosocial Risk

Understand leadership accountability, role clarity, cultural pressures and psychosocial hazards that influence decision-making and team performance.

Module 2: Operational Decision-Making, Supervision and High-Performing Teams

Develop practical supervision, communication and decision-making skills for operational leaders working under pressure.

Module 3: Contractor Management and Project Risk

Strengthen oversight of contractors, project interfaces and shared risk responsibilities.

Module 4: Management of Change and Emerging Operational Technology

Identify and manage risks introduced through change, new systems, restructuring, innovation and technology.

Module 5: Critical Risk Leadership and Governance

Understand critical risk accountability, critical control performance and the leadership role in control assurance.

Module 6: Crisis Leadership and Organisational Resilience

Build the capability to lead during incidents, manage uncertainty and support organisational recovery.

Who Should Attend

This program is suitable for:

  • Supervisors and frontline leaders

  • Team leaders and coordinators

  • Superintendents and operational managers

  • Safety, risk and compliance professionals

  • Project and contractor managers

  • Government, infrastructure, mining, construction, health, utilities and energy sector leaders

  • Technically skilled workers moving into leadership roles

This program is especially relevant for leaders who are close to the work, close to the risk and responsible for decisions that have real operational consequences.

Why This Program Is Different

Most leadership programs focus on communication, motivation and management theory.

This program focuses on the leadership gaps that repeatedly appear in serious incidents and organisational failures, including unclear accountability, weak supervision, poor risk recognition, ineffective contractor oversight, poor change management and failure to verify critical controls.

It is practical, operational and built for leaders who need to make decisions that hold up under scrutiny.
