Course Overview

This 5-day online SafeWork NSW approved course aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfil your role as a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) in NSW.


HSRs in New South Wales are entitled to attend this SafeWork NSW approved five-day training course within three months of making a request for training to their PCBU. Employers are required to allow the HSR to take time off work to attend this training. HSRs are also entitled to attend one day refresher courses every twelve months, commencing one year after the initial five-day course has been completed, as per the Work Health and Safety legislation.


Course Contents

Day 1 – Interpreting the WHS legislative framework

Day 2 – Establishing representation in the workplace

Day 3 – Participating in effective communication

Day 4 – Monitoring PCBU’s management of WHS risks

Day 5 – Issuing of Provisional Improvement Notices

National Unit of Competency

Upon successful completion of the 5-Day Initial Work Health and Safety Representative (HSR) course and subsequence online assessments, students will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for:

  • BSBWHS412 Assist with workplace compliance with WHS laws

  • BSBWHS414 Contribute to WHS risk management

  • BSBWHS416 Contribute to workplace incident response

  • BSBWHS413 Contribute to implementation and maintenance of WHS consultation and participation processes


These 4 units of competency will count towards a Certificate IV in Work, Health and Safety if you chose to further your studies.


Orana Skills Centre are in a working partnership with Training Education and Management Services (TEAMS) RTO 91852 who will be the issuer of Academic Transcripts and Qualifications.

Who Should Attend

  • Persons eligible for the SafeWork NSW HSR Training are HSRs or deputy HSRs elected under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011

Participants must be at least 18 years of age, provide valid photo ID, have good literacy and numeracy skills and the ability to read and write in English.
