About the course
This course contains the knowledge and skills to provide  an advanced first aid response in the event of an  emergency. It is relevant for personnel who may be  required to provide, coordinate and manage a first  aid response across a range of complex situations,  including community and workplace settings.

Course ContentÂ
This course covers the provision of advanced first aid  response, life support, management of casualties,  the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of  medical or other assistance.
Topics Include:
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniquesÂ
- Defibrillation and AED maintenanceÂ
- Bleeding, fractures, burns and other traumaÂ
- Eye and soft tissue injuriesÂ
- Envenomation / poisoningÂ
- Substance abuse (drugs and alcohol)Â
- Hyperthermia and hypothermiaÂ
- Treatment of minor woundsÂ
- Infection control proceduresÂ
- Management of life-threatening bleedingÂ
- Medical conditions (asthma, diabetes)Â
- Assessment of vital signsÂ
- Coordinating first aid activitiesÂ
- Triage of multiple casualtiesÂ
- Evaluation of response to critical incidentsÂ
- Verbal and written reports of the incidentÂ
- Legislative requirements in first aidÂ
- Psychological impacts of first aid incident

Entry RequirementsÂ
Prior to enrolment in this advanced unit, participants should have previous experience in first aid and have attained HLTAID011 Provide First Aid or higher level unit. Participants  should also have the ability to meet the considerable physical demands of the practical skills. It is  recommended participants have language, literacy and  numeracy skills equivalent to level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). Prior to the start of face-to-face training there may be a short knowledge quiz  to check language, literacy and numeracy, as required.
Assessment MethodsÂ
Progressive assessment throughout the course,  including demonstration of practical skills and written  and oral questions relating to underpinning  knowledge. Note that the provision of CPR must be  demonstrated on the floor.
Award IssuedÂ
A nationally-recognised Statement of Attainment  will be issued to all successful participants issued.
