About the Course

This course provides Safety Representatives with the practical skills needed to support safe work, reinforce WHS responsibilities, recognise hazards, escalate issues and promote strong safety behaviours across the business. Participants learn how to identify risks, support incident prevention, and contribute to a proactive safety culture in line with WHS legislation and contemporary risk management practices.


This course is ideal for workers who have been appointed as Safety Representatives, Safety Champions, Safety Administrators or Safety Contacts in their workplace.


Note: This is not an accredited Health and Safety Representative (HSR) course under the WHS Act. This course is designed for health and safety representatives who do not wish to complete the accredited version of the course. Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn how to:

  1. Understand their role as a Safety Representative and how it supports WHS obligations for PCBUs, Officers and workers.

  2. Identify common workplace hazards including psychosocial hazards, high-risk work, manual tasks, hazardous chemicals and mobile equipment.

  3. Distinguish the difference between a hazard, a risk and a control.

  4. Apply contemporary risk management principles, including hierarchy of control and critical control thinking.

  5. Conduct simple workplace inspections and spot checks.

  6. Report issues, escalate risks and support incident prevention.

  7. Support early intervention when changes in work, people or environment introduce new or emerging risks.

  8. Model safe behaviours and promote a culture of shared responsibility.

  9. Understand their role in supporting incident reporting, near miss reporting and preliminary information gathering.

  10. Identify signs of psychosocial hazards and understand when to escalate concerns.

  • Leading Hands and Supervisors wanting a foundational WHS role

  • Workers who support WHS committee functions

  • HR or administration staff involved in safety

  • Anyone wanting a practical introduction to safety responsibilities


Course Duration

1 Full day, face-to-face


Assessment

This non-accredited course includes short quizzes and group activities to reinforce learning. No formal assessments are required.


Certificate

Participants receive a Certificate of Completion from Orana Skills Centre.
