About the course
This course contains the knowledge and skills to provide an advanced first aid response in the event of an emergency. It is relevant for personnel who may be required to provide, coordinate and manage a first aid response across a range of complex situations, including community and workplace settings.

Course Content
This course covers the provision of advanced first aid response, life support, management of casualties, the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance.
Topics Include:
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques
- Defibrillation and AED maintenance
- Bleeding, fractures, burns and other trauma
- Eye and soft tissue injuries
- Envenomation / poisoning
- Substance abuse (drugs and alcohol)
- Hyperthermia and hypothermia
- Treatment of minor wounds
- Infection control procedures
- Management of life-threatening bleeding
- Medical conditions (asthma, diabetes…)
- Assessment of vital signs
- Coordinating first aid activities
- Triage of multiple casualties
- Evaluation of response to critical incidents
- Verbal and written reports of the incident
- Legislative requirements in first aid
- Psychological impacts of first aid incident

Entry Requirements
Prior to enrolment in this advanced unit, participants should have previous experience in first aid and have attained HLTAID011 Provide First Aid or higher level unit. Participants should also have the ability to meet the considerable physical demands of the practical skills. It is recommended participants have language, literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). Prior to the start of face-to-face training there may be a short knowledge quiz to check language, literacy and numeracy, as required.
Assessment Methods
Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge. Note that the provision of CPR must be demonstrated on the floor.
Award Issued
A nationally-recognised Statement of Attainment will be issued to all successful participants issed by LivCor (RTO 3586).
