About the Session

Crystalline silica is a hazardous material found in products like engineered stone, concrete, bricks, tiles and fibre cement. When these materials are disturbed, tiny silica dust particles are released into the air, and once inhaled, they can cause serious, permanent, and sometimes fatal lung disease, including silicosis.

In October 2024, WorkSafe Queensland announced clear training pathways for workers across the engineered stone and construction sectors. This awareness session is ideal for workers who are new to the industry or who need immediate access to foundational training.

Course Overview

Delivered by qualified WHS professionals, this live, instructor-led Zoom session ensures your team understands the risks, controls and legal obligations surrounding silica dust exposure.

Key topics include:

  • What is crystalline silica and where is it found?

  • Health risks: silicosis, lung cancer, kidney disease and more

  • Activities and materials that generate silica dust

  • WorkSafe QLD’s expectations and training pathways

  • Understanding duties under the WHS Regulation

  • Effective dust controls using the hierarchy of control

  • Safe use and limitations of respiratory protective equipment

  • Health monitoring, air monitoring and worker consultation
