About the course

This course is for new and experienced personnel who work at heights at an operational level, typically in the resources and infrastructure industries. It covers a broad range of height risk situations, and how to put safe working procedures in place under the regulations and legislative requirements for working safely at heights.

You learn how to:

  • identify risks and put the right control measures in place
  • interpret and apply risk assessment documentation, and technical and safety information
  • understand the strengths and limitations of the fall protection equipment available for working at heights
  • install, check, fit, adjust and anchor fall protection systems and associated equipment

You then perform two work safely at heights scenarios using different safety systems.

  • Scenario 2: work safely at height on a flat surface

Documentation: you complete an equipment fault log to the required standard.

You also complete a written theory assessment of multiple-choice and short answer questions. You must answer every question successfully.

Entry requirements and support

You need the physical and psychological capability to take part in the practical demonstrations, which means working safely at heights while wearing the right PPE and using fall protection equipment. You need enough physical ability to occasionally lift equipment from the ground to overhead, and to access heights above 2 metres.

To complete the course you need these core skills:

  • Learning: follow instructions, identify hazards, understand risk assessments, and ask for clarification when needed
  • Reading: read and interpret regulations, workplace procedures, signage, and operating instructions for equipment
  • Writing: fill out forms, write short notes such as field notes or incident reports, and clearly record key details from work tasks
  • Oral communication: communicate clearly and listen carefully when giving or receiving instructions
  • Numeracy: use numbers to support safe work, for example measuring distances for setting up, working out fall clearance, and interpreting equipment ratings
  • Digital literacy: use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms and access learning resources

When you enrol you complete a short self-evaluation against these core skills, so your trainer knows about any extra support you may need. For the online option you need a computer, smartphone, tablet or other device with internet access. The online learning is in the student portal, and support is available if you need it.
